For most driver licensing-related transactions, including vehicle registration and licensing, you will need to prove your identity.

For some vehicle or licensing-related transactions, you must reside in the ACT.

You must reside in the ACT to hold an ACT driver licence, for example.

For these transactions you will also need to prove you are an ACT resident.

To register a vehicle in the ACT, an ACT garaging address must be provided. If your vehicle is garaged interstate, you must contact the interstate authority.

Acceptable proof of residency documents

Unless the primary or secondary proof of identity documents you supply establish your residency, you’ll need additional documents.

As long as your full name and your residential address are listed, the following documents are acceptable:

  • Contract of Purchase, Current Lease or Rental Agreement for relevant premises prepared by a real estate agency, Defence Housing Australia or the ACT Government. Private rental agreements or receipts are not accepted.
  • Rates Assessment Notice which is current and issued by ACT Revenue Office.
  • Current Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs Concession Card displaying ACT residential address Dependents will need their own individual card.
  • Utility account relating to the nominated physical address for electricity, gas, water or land line telephone paid within 6 months from date of application.
  • Utility provider welcome letter or bundle advice related to the nominated physical address received within 3 months from date of application.
  • Home Internet account relating to the nominated residential address paid within 6 months from date of application.
  • Pay Television account relating to the nominated residential address paid within 6 months from date of application.
  • Confirmation of Address Minute accompanied by an identity card both issued by Department of Defence.
  • Letter from University residence deemed suitable by Authority accompanied by Student Identity Card.
  • Bank Statement with evidence of regular purchases in the ACT within 3 months from date of application.
  • Current interstate registration renewal notice related to the nominated physical address.
  • Documents from an Australian Government Department or ACT Government Directorate relating to you and your nominated physical address received within 6 months from date of application (excluding documents from the Australian Electoral Commission AEC).
  • MyGov electronic correspondence displaying the nominated physical address received within 6 months from date of application.
