If you hold a current ACT driver licence you can renew or replace it.

In most cases you can renew or replace your licence online.

You can also visit an Access Canberra Service Centre.

Renewal reminders

You will get a courtesy reminder via email or post if you haven’t provided your email before your licence expires.

The best way to get reminders is to register your email address with Access Canberra.

If you have an ACT driver licence, or an ACT registered vehicle you have 14 days to let us know of any change of address.

This includes if you change your:

  • residential address
  • postal address
  • garage address.

If you’ve moved from interstate, you have three months to update your details.

Make sure your contact details are correct.

If you provide your mobile phone number, you will get an SMS reminder 2 days before the renewal is due. If you don’t renew it, you will also get an SMS notification 2 days after it expires.

Over 50 or have a medical condition

Medical conditions

If you hold an ACT driver licence you must tell Access Canberra if you have a permanent or long-term illness, injury, or incapacity that might impair your driving ability.

Access Canberra may ask you to demonstrate your fitness to drive to ensure you can safely operate a vehicle. This may involve one or both:

  • a medical examination
  • a driving assessment by an occupational therapist

Licence holders over 50

If you’re aged 50, 60, 65 or 70 you’ll need to do an eye test when you’re renewing your licence.

Licence holders who are 75 or older need to get yearly medical assessments from their doctor.

Find more information about requirements for licence holders over 75.

You can renew your driver licence online for up to 5 years. The photo on the licence will be the same as the most recent photo recorded on our system.
