In most countries, if you have a valid Australian driver licence you can drive overseas if you have an International Driving Permit (IDP).

An IDP is a United Nations sanctioned document that:

  • translates your driving classification into 9 languages other than English
  • is recognised in over 150 countries.

As long as your Australian licence is active, with an IDP you can drive in those countries without taking any tests or assessments.

Apply for an IDP

Only the NRMA and associated Members of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) are authorised to issue IDPs.

Visit the NRMA website or the AAA website to apply for an IDP.

Visiting the ACT

There are conditions for driving in the ACT as an overseas visitor, and if you become a resident, you’ll need to get an ACT drivers licence.
