The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) administers the Environment Protection Act 1997 (the Act).

Under the Act, to operate a petrol or service station – a facility designed to store more than 50,000 litres of petroleum products – you need an Environmental Authorisation.

Responsible person

The person responsible for the operation of the underground petroleum system and associated dispensing system must apply for the Environmental Authorisation.

The person responsible may be:

  • a large petroleum company in the case of franchised petrol stations
  • the individual owner in the case of an owner-operated petrol station or commercial/industrial site.

Environmental guidelines

Operators of petrol and service stations have other responsibilities under the Act and the Environment Protection Regulation 2005.
