Under the Authorised Examiner Scheme, qualified Automotive Vehicle Technicians work in an Authorised Inspection Station where they inspect motor vehicles for the purpose of gaining registration in the ACT.

To become an Authorised Examiner Repairer:

  • you need to complete the Authorised Examiner Scheme training course, which will be scheduled on application
  • the premises you work in needs to be approved as an Authorised Inspection Station.

The Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2000 sets out the eligibility requirements for the Authorised Examiner Scheme. See:

If you’re an Authorised Examiner Repairer in another state or territory, you may be eligible to work in the ACT under the Automatic Mutual Recognition Scheme.

Apply for authorisation

Authorised Examiner Repairers

To become an Authorised Examiner Repairer:

  1. Complete the Application to become an Authorised Examiner Repairer [PDF 160 KB].
  2. Provide a National Police History Check that is dated within the last 6 months.
  3. Submit your application by:
  4. Access Canberra will contact you to make a booking for you to complete the Authorised Examiner Scheme training course and to take payment for your application and the Training Course fee via credit card or visa debit card.

Authorised Inspection Stations

To have your premises approved as an Authorised Inspection Station:

  1. Complete the Application to become an Authorised Inspection Station [PDF 132 KB].
  2. Provide a National Police History Check that is dated within the last 6 months.
  3. Access Canberra will inspect your premises.
  4. Submit your application by:
  5. Access Canberra will contact you to take payment for your application fee via credit card or visa debit card.

Once approved, the premises is added to the public register as an Authorised Inspection Station.

Renewal

Authorised Examiner Repairers

To renew your authorisation, you must provide the following information before your authorisation expiry date:

  1. Complete Application for renewal of an Authorised Examiner [PDF 153 KB]
  2. Provide a National Police History Check that is dated within the last 6 months
  3. Email completed documents to: AERinbox@act.gov.au
  4. Telephone (02) 6205 7173 to make your renewal payment with a credit card or visa debit card.
  5. Note: payment will not be accepted until all documents have been submitted.

    Note: late applications for renewal will impact your authorisation and you will not be able to conduct inspections until your authorisation is renewed.

Authorised Inspection Stations

To renew your authorisation, you must provide the following information before your expiry date:

  1. Complete Application for Renewal of an Authorised Inspection Station [PDF 151 KB]
  2. Complete Authorised Inspection Station Declaration [PDF 439 KB]
  3. Provide a National Police History Check that is dated within the last 6 months
  4. Email completed documents to: AERinbox@act.gov.au

Note: payment will not be accepted until all documents have been submitted.
