Vehicle owners must make sure that numberplates are correctly fitted and displayed on their vehicle. When numberplates are not displayed correctly, the operator may receive a fine or be issued with a defect notice.

Information about the positioning and visibility of numberplates is available in Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2000 (the Regulations).

Displaying your numberplates

To make sure your numberplates comply with the Regulations, you must:

  • not hide, block or deface the numberplate
  • ensure all characters can be read
  • confirm the numberplate can be seen from at least 20 m away
  • position the plates upright and parallel to the vehicle’s axles
  • position the plates no higher than 1.3 m above ground level
  • ensure the plate can be seen within a 45-degree arc of the plate, above the plate and to the sides.

If using a numberplate cover, you must ensure it:

  • is clear, clean and flat over the surface of the numberplate
  • is not reflective
  • has no or other characteristics that would stop a traffic offence detection device.

The Regulations provide detailed diagrams at Division 3.5.4.

Requirement for bike rack numberplates

Bike rack numberplates must be used when your bike rack hides or blocks the rear numberplate of your vehicle. The bike rack numberplate must be made of the same material as the vehicle plate and show all characters.

Fitting numberplates to your vehicle

Numberplates are produced in plastic or metal for ACT registered vehicles.

You can request plates with or without holes depending on the type. Make sure you bring a screwdriver and fittings when you collect your plates. Access Canberra does not supply tools or fittings.

Fitting numberplates with holes

Attach numberplates produced with holes by using 5 – 6 mm pan-head screws.

Use a nylon washer between the screw and numberplate and don’t overtighten the screw. This will prevent damage to the plate and your vehicle.

You cannot use this method to attach European style plates.

Fitting numberplates without holes

Display numberplates produced without holes by placing them into a numberplate frame. Fix the numberplate frame to your vehicle by following the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.

Adding holes to your numberplates

Drilling holes in all types of numberplates is done at your own risk and may damage your plates.

Replacing damaged numberplates

If you damage your numberplates, you can pay for new ones.
