If you’re buying a vehicle registered in the ACT, and it:

  • weighs up to 4.5 tonnes and is more than 6 years old, or
  • is imported

it needs to have a roadworthy inspection before you can transfer registration to yourself.

Depending on the age, type and use of the vehicle, other inspection requirements may apply.

Read about roadworthy inspections.

Imported vehicles

If you have purchased an imported vehicle, the vehicle’s registration status and compliance plate determine where you can get it inspected.

Vehicle registration and transfer

When you buy an ACT registered vehicle you have 14 days to transfer the registration. Registration after 14 days will attract a late fee.

To register, or transfer registration of a vehicle, trailer or caravan in the ACT you need to visit an Access Canberra Service Centre.

Use the Vehicle registration and transfer guide to work out:

  • what you need to do
  • what paperwork you’ll need to complete
  • which fees apply to your situation.
