LPG and CNG vehicle registration
Vehicles that run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) need an inspection every year.
If you’ve converted your vehicle to gas, you also need to get an inspection.
Gas-powered vehicles need inspections before registration, and when you renew registration.
Depending on the age, type and use of the vehicle, other inspection requirements may apply.
Getting a gas inspection
A licenced gasfitter needs to do the inspection.
View a list of licensed gasfitters.
Gas inspection certificates
If your vehicle passes inspection, the gasfitter will give you a gas inspection certificate.
You will need this certificate to register or renew registration of your vehicle.
If your vehicle is due for inspection, this will need to be presented to Access Canberra either before or when you renew (if renewing in person).
The gas certificate can be provided to Access Canberra:
- in person at an Access Canberra Service Centre
- by post to GPO Box 158 Canberra ACT 2601
- online.
If you are travelling interstate and not in the ACT at the time of renewal for your gas vehicle, an Access Canberra will accept an interstate gas inspection report from an Authorised Gasfitter.
Register your gas-powered vehicle
There may be other requirements for registering your gas-powered vehicle.
Visit the vehicle registration and transfer guide.
LPG vehicle registration vehicle labels
If your light motor vehicle has an LPG or CNG system installed, you need to display a label on the front and rear numberplates to identify it.
The labels alert first responders like police, firefighters and paramedics to any hazards they represent at the scene of an accident.
Without the labels the first responders may unknowingly expose themselves to danger.
For more information read the Hydrogen Labelling Information Factsheet [PDF 246KB].
If you don’t display the labels, you may receive an infringement notice.

Gas vehicle concessions
If you are registering a gas vehicle, you may be entitled to a concession on the registration fees.
