Backflow prevention devices stop used and potentially contaminated water from entering Canberra’s fresh water supply.

They’re typically installed in large commercial buildings such as offices, apartment complexes, universities, schools and hospitals.

They are also installed anywhere there is a medium to high risk of backflow occurring, such as an irrigation system or rainwater tank connected to the main water supply.

Property owner responsibilities

If you own a property with one or more backflow prevention devices installed, you must have them registered with Access Canberra at the time of installation.

You need to have them tested by a licensed plumber every 12 months after installation.

View the register of licensed water supply plumbers.

Only a licensed plumber who is endorsed to test backflow prevention devices can complete a backflow device report.

Your plumber will need to submit a backflow test report to Access Canberra to let us know the work has been completed.

Access Canberra will send you a reminder of these testing requirements when your device is registered.

Register a device or lodge an annual test report

Plumbers can lodge reports and make payments .

The initial test is free and registering the annual test is $26.00 per report.
