When you need to register or transfer registration

You need to register or transfer registration for vehicles, trailers and caravans if:

- you’ve inherited one from a family member
- you've been gifted one
- you’ve moved to the ACT and the vehicle is registered interstate
- it will be used for a company or charity

If road safety cameras detect you speeding, running a red light or using a mobile device, we'll check your vehicle to make sure it's registered.

Length of registration
If your vehicle already has an ACT registration, you can register your vehicle for periods of 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months. If the vehicle already has registration when you acquire it, this period will continue.
Companies with fleets of vehicles can choose a common expiry date. This means the registrations on all vehicles in the fleet will be due for renewal at the same time.
When you make a payment online with us, you may be asked to input a security code. The code will be sent to the mobile number you have registered with your bank. This increases the security of your payments with us.
