You are eligible for reduced registration costs for private goods carrying and appropriate passenger carrying vehicles that have been modified to carry wheelchair users.

Wheelchair modified vehicles are eligible for registration as a passenger carrying vehicle with lower costs for:

  • registration which is calculated at the lowest weight class (tare weight is recorded as 10 kg)
  • motor accident injury insurance

This concession is only available for private motor vehicle owners.

Registration

To register a wheelchair modified vehicle:

  1. Get advice from an engineer before making any modifications to the vehicle.
  2. Complete modifications to the vehicle and have it certified by an engineer.
  3. Pass an inspection at the Access Canberra Motor Vehicle Inspection Station. Call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 to book an inspection.
  4. Bring a copy of the engineer’s report with you to the inspection. Engineering reports must be submitted to vehicle safety standards prior to the vehicle inspection.

Once you pass inspection, you can register the vehicle.
