If you make changes to your vehicle that will affect its description you must notify Access Canberra within 14 days.

Call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 to find out where your vehicle should be inspected.

Depending on the age, type and use of the vehicle, other inspection requirements may apply.

Types of description changes

Examples of minor description changes include:

  • change of engine (same capacity)
  • change of engine (increased up to 20% of original engine power)
  • change of colour
  • vehicle make or model correction
  • incorrect details recorded at time of vehicle registration.

Some changes that impact the vehicles performance must be inspected at the Access Canberra Motor Vehicle Inspection Station in Hume.

Change of detail inspections are free at the Access Canberra Motor Vehicle Inspection Station in Hume. If you get your car inspected anywhere else, you will be charged for a roadworthy inspection fee.

They may also need engineer reports.

Registration after inspection

If approved during the roadworthy inspection, the changes are recorded on your registration record.

The changes may require additional registration fees or a refund.

You’ll be given a new registration certificate.

Alterations that need different inspections

These alterations aren’t considered a change of description. They may need a vehicle identity inspection, modified vehicle inspection or an engineer’s certification:

  • increase to gross vehicle mass or gross trailer mass
  • engineering report
  • body type change
  • engine change type (for example 6 cylinder to V8)
  • automatic transmission to manual
  • alteration to seating.
